We’re glad you asked! A well-cared for retainer may last for years. Please call our office immediately if your retainer is lost, broken, or no longer fits. General care instructions follow:

• Brush your retainers with a soft toothbrush and warm (not hot) water. Do not use toothpaste. You may soak your retainer in Efferdent, Polident or other appliance cleaners, but this does not replace brushing.
• Always store your retainer in their case when they are not in your mouth. Most retainers are lost in lunchrooms and restaurants.
• Keep your retainers out of reach of pets.
• Avoid exposing your retainers to high heat. Never leave them in a hot car, boil them or put them in the dishwasher.

We’re glad you asked! Orthodontic retention is a lifelong commitment. Here are some reminders:

• Wear your retainers for at least 8 hours every night after your braces are removed. You must do this as long as you want to maintain your results.
• Never bite your retainer into place. Instead, use your fingers to place the retainers.
• Never flip or play with your retainer while it’s in your mouth. This loosens them and can even break them.
• Do not eat, drink or chew gum while wearing your retainers.
• Remove your retainers while swimming or playing contact sports.
